Sigur Ros

I first heard Sigur Ros on CBC's Radio Sonic five or six years ago. Parted from my body and dropped on a cloud, I haven't stopped hyping about them since - spreading this new testament of faith in music and winning many more souls.

Sigur Ros is also the only band to produce videos that I actually like. This is a big deal considering I typically don't like the money-grubbing of half naked guitar thwanging simply for the sake of half naked guitar thwanging. It's not a statement about true life, love or relationships. The masterpiece "Višrar Vel Til Loftįrįsa" is. Set in the '50's, it follows the close relations of two young soccer boys to a skin-tingling climax: a kiss. It is, however, the feeling of becoming a part of the music that makes Sigur Ros.

My favourite band - couldn't ya tell? I don't spend a month and a half cramping my thumbs and bleeding my eyes for any other reason than. . .

"Two Boys Kissing"

The open gayness of "Two Boys Kissing" also opens a lot of questions and shakes a lot of heads. But I chose this image for no other reason than to tell the world about this amazing little band from Iceland and to smile upon their  boy-boy love unclosetted. I'm all about love. It doesn't matter what kind - boy-girl, boy-boy, girl-girl or just plain kooky love, elements of which, I am sure are contained herein. I just love the band. Period. This promo shot is my favourite. Love those kooky hats. Crazy how long it took me to get all of the beads together to finish them - I spent more time on the yellow hat than the rest of the artwork.

The biggest of all of my beadworks, and the only one to include three people, "Two Boys Kissing" took several trips to the dollar store to complete. I had no other stimulation for a month and a half than slashing dead corduroy and stabbing dead cotton. Yep, I'm mad. I agree. To put so much in and to get so little back is the real killer - unfair to myself.  And it is. . .  oh, but it isn't. I love what I do. The satisfaction of accomplishment and the fair feeling of giving so much creative time to people you love provides enough fairness (to myself) to out-fair whatever fair feeling any amount of money can provide.

Formed in 1994, Sigur Ros, or Victory Rose, have proven themselves more than just skilled and inspired musicians; their dreamy cloud of sound can part the most beastly soul from its body. Jonsi, the vocalist and guitarist - blind in one eye since birth - often speaks to  my inner beast in "Hopelandic" - a pretty language mutated from Icelandic and the hope-filled falsetto of angels who play their harps with Jonsi's cello bow. No coincidence - Jonsi plays his guitar with the same bow.

Curious  Trivia:
Did you know that Sigur Ros spoiled the first printing of įgętis byrjun by shoddily assembling and gluing the cases together themselves? It's true. Glue stained cd's rendered the pressing useless. Useless? No way. A charming limited edition muck-up perhaps. I'd love to have one of those.
