Alone together 03

For Jay:

My first boyfriend, your mother
once walked in on us foolin' around.
You tried to turn me on with Paradise
by the Dashboard light by Meatloaf:
"We were barely 17 and we were barely
dressed." Sheesh, sounds like us. Now
I remember why I hate that song so
much
.

We necked in the backseat of your
father's car while your father was
drivin'. "Wow! Jay has a girlfriend."

Not for long. You avoided me
at your best friends' house parties
because of all the other girls there. And "other girls" are always prettier than the
girl you're with
.

For Jason:

My second boyfriend, you often took me to your uncle's house. You sat at the kitchen table drinking beer together until you both got loaded. Then your uncle beat his wife. "Let's leave," you insisted. We had to "stay out of it."

Stay out of it? Why don't we do something about it? He's killing her and she's letting him because it's "his house and his couch." Well, what about her life and those kids? Does he own them too?

     For Derek:

The nicest and most attractive of
the three boys, my third boyfriend,
had bright green eyes, black wavy
      hair and pale white skin.

You hippied up your skinny legs in
scuffed out jeans; you punked out
your skinny arms in a matching
jacket. You hippied up and punked
out the closest thing to cool I ever
shared my body and soul with, even
though you went to O'Donel High
and your favourite band was Motley
Crue. I went to Eugene Vater's
      Pentecostal Collegiate. No better.

However, my favourite band  was
      Stiff Little Fingers. Now That's
      pretty punked out.
